Wildlife Watching Around Khaolak Merlin Resort

Khaolak Merlin Resort in Phang Nga Province is surrounded by a variety of natural attractions that make it an excellent base for wildlife observation. The nearby Ton Pling Waterfall, Ton Prai Waterfall, and Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park each offer different habitats and unique species. Whether you enjoy reptiles, insects, birds, or amphibians, the forests around the resort provide rewarding encounters for nature enthusiasts.

Ton Pling Waterfall: Vibrant Forest Edges and Streamside Encounters

Ton Pling Waterfall, the closest nature spot to the resort, features a shaded forest path running alongside a clear stream. This area is particularly good for observing reptiles and insects that prefer humid, lowland forest environments.

One notable species often encountered along the vegetation near the trail is the Wagler’s pit viper ( Tropidolaemus wagleri ), known in Thai as “งูเขียวตุ๊กแก. This beautifully patterned viper is usually seen coiled on low branches or shrubs, waiting motionlessly for prey. Females are larger and display vivid green, yellow, and black markings. While fascinating to observe, this species is venomous, so visitors should maintain a safe distance and avoid disturbing the snake.

Ton Pling is also a good location to find the striking Red-nosed lanternfly ( Pyrops karenius ). This attractive planthopper can often be spotted resting on tree trunks, displaying colorful patterns and an elongated cephalic process. Its distinctive appearance makes it popular among photographers and insect enthusiasts exploring the area.

Ton Prai Waterfall: Deep Forest Habitat with Secretive Wildlife

Moving farther inland, Ton Prai Waterfall offers a more secluded and mature rainforest ecosystem. The trail leading to the waterfall passes through dense vegetation, providing excellent habitat for reptiles, frogs, and camouflaged insects.

One of the larger animals that visitors may encounter here is the Dumeril’s monitor ( Varanus dumerillii ), or ตุ๊ดตู่” in Thai. This semi-arboreal monitor lizard is shy but impressive, easily recognizable by its reddish-brown coloration and banded tail. It often stays near forest streams or thick undergrowth, moving quietly through leaf litter in search of food.

Amphibian enthusiasts will appreciate the presence of Tenasserim White-lipped Frog ( Chalcorana eschatia ), a forest frog commonly found around damp rocks and shallow stream edges. Its agile movements and subtle greenish-brown coloration allow it to blend effectively into the environment, making it a fun species to look for during a slow walk.

Ton Prai’s dense vegetation is also home to the Green stick insect ( Aschiphasma annulipes ), a well known for its exceptional camouflage. It mimics twigs and branches so effectively that spotting one requires patience and a keen eye. This species is active mostly at night, but individuals may be found resting motionlessly during the day along low vegetation.

Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park: Diverse Forest Trails and Elusive Species

The largest natural area near the resort is Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park, which contains a mix of evergreen forest, coastal vegetation, and mountain foothills. Its well-maintained trails make it one of the region’s richest wildlife-viewing locations.

Among the forest’s most iconic insects is the orchid mantis ( Hymenopus coronatus ), a beautifully camouflaged mantis with pink-and-white petal-like limbs. It mimics orchid flowers so perfectly that it often goes unnoticed even when nearby. The species is typically found around flowering plants along forest edges, especially during the rainy season when vegetation is lush.

The park is also home to the mysterious Bay Owl ( Phodilus badius ), or นกแสกแดง. This nocturnal bird is rarely seen but occasionally heard around dusk. Its heart-shaped face and reddish tones make it one of Southeast Asia’s most striking owls.

Enjoy Your Nature Journey

The natural areas surrounding Khaolak Merlin Resort offer a relaxed and enjoyable way for guests to connect with the forest. Whether you prefer spotting colorful insects, listening for owls at dusk, or simply taking a peaceful walk by the waterfalls, each location has something special to offer. We hope your stay brings you not only comfort, but also memorable encounters with the beautiful wildlife that makes Khao Lak such a unique place.
