A Green Retreat in the Dry Season

Written by Kawin Jiaranaisakul

March is often characterized by dry conditions, with arid landscapes dominating much of the natural scenery. However, within the grounds of the hotel, an oasis of greenery persists, providing a vital refuge for various wildlife species.

The hotel’s lush gardens, shaded trees, and water sources offer food and shelter to numerous creatures, ensuring their survival despite the harsh seasonal conditions. Both diurnal and nocturnal species find shelter here, making this managed green space a hotspot of biodiversity.

A Refuge for Wildlife

Even as the surrounding environment becomes drier, the hotel grounds support a thriving ecosystem. Birds, amphibians, mammals, and insects take advantage of the available resources, with some species being more prominent during this time of year. The balance between nature and human presence allows for fascinating encounters with local wildlife, particularly at dawn and dusk.

Featured Wildlife in March

Spotted Wood Owl

(Strix seloputo)

The Spotted Wood Owl is a striking nocturnal predator often seen perching on large branches within the hotel premises. Recognizable by its dark brown plumage with white spots and large, expressive eyes, this owl plays a crucial role in controlling rodent populations. Its deep hooting calls echo through the night, creating a mystical ambiance within the green retreat.

Asian Common Toad

and Other Amphibians

As night falls, the familiar calls of the Asian common toad fill the air. This adaptable amphibian thrives in both natural and urban environments, benefiting from the damp areas around the hotel’s water features. Feeding on insects and small invertebrates, these toads contribute to pest control and maintain ecological balance.

Hermit Crabs

(Coenobita violascens)

Along the coastal areas and garden pathways, hermit crabs scuttle about in search of food and new shells. These crustaceans are scavengers, feeding on organic debris, and are particularly active in the early evening. Their ability to repurpose empty shells as protective homes highlights nature’s resourcefulness in sustaining life even in challenging conditions.

The Arrival of Cicada Season

March also marks the peak season for cicadas, whose distinctive buzzing fills the warm afternoon air. Emerging from the ground after years of development as nymphs, cicadas cling to tree trunks and branches, shedding their exoskeletons to reveal their delicate wings. Their calls serve as mating signals, resonating throughout the landscape and adding to the lively natural symphony of the season.

While March may be a dry season, the hotel’s preserved greenery continues to support a diverse array of wildlife. From the nocturnal Spotted Wood Owl and slow loris to the ever-active hermit crabs and common toads, these creatures find sustenance and refuge within the vibrant habitat.

The emergence of cicadas further enriches the ecosystem, reminding us of nature’s resilience and adaptability. This harmonious coexistence between nature and human habitation makes the hotel grounds a remarkable refuge for wildlife throughout the season.
